We quickly got to understand and like the railways, though they were not always on time! We travelled first class for a small extra premium, and that meant most of the time we were alone, or nearly so in our compartment. The trip started along the same route we had arrived, as we watched enormous waves crashing along the coast for mile after mile. At times we were able to look over to the Rif mountains in the east, and at other times the landscape a stand-in for southern England, complete with minarets replacing church spires. As we neared Meknes the land got more hilly, and more passengers joined us in our compartment. We saw many orange orchards.
